Why do you write?

Why do you write? It seems like such a simple question, but for a lot of people you could probably write a novel about why you write novels.  And I'm not just talking to the novelists either because writing can look different for each and every person.  Maybe you journal everyday or maybe you're actually a journalist.  Maybe you write songs or maybe poems.  Perhaps you write children's books, or maybe you write epic adventure novels.  Whatever shape or form your writing takes, there is purpose behind it and it brings you joy.

Writing has been a big part of my life for many many years.  I'm only 23, but it's been something that I've always loved to do.  It started out with journaling.  I can't tell you how many colorful journals I had from Claire's when I was younger and they always had to have the clasp with the lock, because hello, privacy! My 10 year old thoughts were very important to me.  Oh and the gel pens! I had to have those sparkly gel pens to write about who I was crushing on, which was constantly changing.  It may seem silly and insignificant, but it's something that has really stuck with me through the years.  To this day I still journal, not as often as I would like, but I do it as much as I can.  My journal is where I unleash everything that I'm feeling.  For some reason, physically writing down what's going on in my head helps me so much more than just saying it out loud.  One reason being that I'm a pretty introverted person and sharing my feelings with other people verbally is something that is very difficult for me.  I'm also very aware though that keeping all those feelings bottled up could possibly lead to a catastrophic outburst of emotion, which I'm not a fan of, so I write it out.  I write down all the amazing things that are happening, all the terrible things that are going on, the things that are making my heart hurt, and the things that are making my heart sing.  It's therapeutic!

Journaling isn't the only way I work through things and express myself though.  I also write songs and poetry.  Many of you know that I'm a musician and songwriter and it's something I aspire to do on a professional level.  I didn't start writing songs with that mindset though.  I started writing songs to work through things that were going on in my life.  Just like journaling, it's how I let all those pent up feelings out.

Another form of writing that I've always wanted to do is write a novel.  I'm a huge book nerd and I absolutely love reading and stories so I figure, why not give it a try! It's not going to hurt anything and it could be a great learning and growing experience for me in my writing.

So why do I write? Honestly, besides the fact that it's something that I really enjoy doing, I write to keep myself sane. If I didn't write I think I would probably keep all of my emotions bottled up inside and like I said before, I'm not a fan of those repercussions!

So why do you write? Just for the fun of it? To express yourself? I would love to know your story!

Be Wistful and Wander,
Jacey
